Fixing washed-out beach bike path is 'low-priority' for county, sources say
Winter storms took out a portion of the Marvin Braude trail. Will it be repaired in time for summer?
The winter storms that battered California with rain and high winds washed out a section of the Marvin Braude beach path, a trail popular with cyclists, joggers and walkers.
Six months after the storms, fixing the path is a ‘low priority’ for the county, sources tell People Powered L.A.
The storms actually damaged two sections of trail. One section has been fixed.
In Redondo Beach, washed-away sand caused part of the trail approaching Torrance to collapse. That section was fixed quickly, an L.A. County lifeguard said, because emergency vehicles use it for access.
In contrast, this lifeguard said, the section washed out on Dockweiler is “low-priority” since it’s only for cyclists and pedestrians.
Checking out the damaged section in person seems to corroborate the lifeguard’s assessment. There is signage marking the trail closed, and fencing put up around it, but no signs of active work.
Right now, trail users are detoured to the access road for Dockweiler Beach parking (South Marine Avenue). Off-season that solution is workable. But come summer, the Dockweiler parking lot will be busy with beachgoers and revelers, and not an ideal spot for families and kids to be biking through.
